The OPW says “a major fluvial (rainfall) flood event in November 2000 affected 5000 households and 800 businesses. In February 2002 extreme high levels …. led to significant damage. November 2002 caused widespread flooding particularly in counties Meath and Dublin”. These flooding events encouraged us to consider how we can contribute to sorting this problem out – firstly, with attenuation boxes (preventative) and now flood doors.

2009 may be an exceptional year but is it ? Who can predict what is going to happen in the future? The evidence suggests that this is likely to be at least, an annual occurance.
The OPW is tasked with dealing with major flood relief measures in priority areas. Your priority has to be your home. Many houses that have flood waters going through them were built on flood plains but that does not mean that they should not be protected.
2.3 million homes in the UK are built on flood plains. Here in Ireland it is estimated that 350,000 houses are in flood danger.
In the UK the cost of flood water damage has been escalating in recent years. Cost is not the only issue to be taken into consideration with flood damage. Other factors are just as important and potentially more distressing, like the smell, dirty water residue, the loss of precious photos, dvds and momentos, and the relocating to other premises while the house damage is being resolved.
The Government in Ireland has allocated €10.5 million so far to help. But with the current financial crisis immersing this country, it will be up to each individual to look after themselves.
Sandbags are a useful temporary measure to halt flood waters but have proven to be ineffective on the whole. Seepage of flood water is inevitable. This flood water contains bacteria (sewage based bacteria and rat urine which can cause vials disease) that can cause potentially fatal infections/diseases. Sandbags also need to be disposed of or refilled when required and stored.
